The head of the State Council Information Office, Wang Chen, said on Thursday that the number of internet users in China reached 450 million at the end of November. That means one out of 3 people is online in China, an increase of 20 percent from a year ago. At the same time, Wang said government offices and companies are facing increasing threats from hackers and viruses. It considers tightening control of the internet a protective measure. The Chinese government is also nervous about potential criticism of it spreading on the Internet. It has already shut down connections with overseas services, such as Twitter and YouTube, because they allow users to post video, audio, or images without government censorship.
